What Happens at your Feet Doesn’t Stay at Your Feet
An awesome question came into our Spiral Line Muscle Mastery Challenge group about addressing forward head posture using the spiral line muscles. This made me realize something potent that I want share here with you today.
I recently had a client whose neck was stiff when side-bending to the left. We worked on his shoulder and neck, then his spine. There were changes. He felt better. But, his neck was still stuck to the right. What never ceases to surprise me is that when we got down to the left ankle and worked with inversion, the neck allowed more motion, immediately. So awesome!
It's natural to get honed in on the area where the pain is.
The tightness tends to get all the attention.
The inflammation swells its way onto the center stage.
This even happens to me sometimes.
Especially when I have a client who really wants the symptoms to go away. This is exacerbated when they expect me to figure it all out in one hour.
On my best days, I know better.
You cannot unravel decades of compensation patterns in one session.
You cannot fix a problem by only looking at it from one angle.
Sometimes the issue is where it began.
Other times the root cause is somewhere completely different.
MOST times, the problem is spread across multiple joints and multiple muscles.
As soon as you stand up, your feet are sensing the ground, sending signals up the chain. If they can. The ability of your 33 foot joints to adapt and communicate is essential. Their strength matters. More than anyone acknowledges out there in the movement and therapy world.
Stuffing feet into rigid shoes and ignoring their existence horrifies me.
How would you feel if I placed you into a dark contained space with low air circulation?
Would you ever place your hands inside of shoes? No.
These two regions of the body are very similar in their design.
Your connection and relationship with your feet is crucial.
Your feet (and your clients) could literally be standing between YOU and fluid, pain-free movement. They could be hiding both tension and weakness that is keeping you from feeling your best.
Plantar-Fasciitis - Bunions - Flat Feet - High Arches
These are all symptoms of the reckless expectations placed on the feet. It's not your fault. It's just a lack of information and poor approaches out there in the world of physical therapy.
It doesn't have to be so dire. We don't have to be misinformed and ignorant.
On Friday at 1:30pm MST, Meet Your Feet in a way like never before, during my 90 minute virtual class on zoom.
