What's a "normal" waist size?

In the Fitness Assessments class at Mesa College, I am teaching the students about Body Fat and Circumference Measurements from the American Council on Exercise Personal Training Manual.

Criteria for Waist Circumference in Adults (Bray, G.A. 2004)
Waist = Smallest part of your stomach

Low Risk for women: 27.5-35 inches
Low Risk for men: 31.5-39 inches

According to Janssen et al., 2004:
For every 1-inch increase in waist circumference in men, the following health risks are associated:

Blood Pressure increases 10%
Cholesterol increases 8%
Triglycerides increase 18%
Metabolic Syndrome risk increases 18%
HDL decreases 15%
