Six Ways to Get Moving When You are Unmotivated

We all have those days, when it seems impossible to exercise, even though we know we need it. Physical activity benefits mood, digestion, immune function and more. Having a reason for exercise is helpful, but might not be enough sometimes. Peruse these ideas to see if something sparks you to get going again.

  1. Attend a class. The key to my career has been that people like to have someone to work out with! I attend a yoga class when I feel stuck. The money and the schedule get me out the door. And the change of scenery is nice too.

  2. Find a friend. Having pals who enjoy similar types of exercise as you can be a lifesaver. Schedule a regular date with one to catch up and get moving together. Or call someone to talk to while you walk.

  3. Take care of a pet. If you have a dog, a horse or some other animal that likes to walk - use them as your excuse. Do them a service and take them out for a gentle walk.

  4. Commit to just 15 minutes. After that if you want to stop you can. But, you might want to keep going once you get started.

  5. Evaluate for fatigue. Are you getting enough sleep and rest? Some of your resistance to workout could be an underlying need to restore. Check in with your body to find out if you need self-care before you can exert energy for exercise.

  6. Try something new. Maybe your workouts need a twist. Attend a dance class, try kickboxing, rollerskating, Pilates or something outside what you typically choose to shake things up.

We all need motivation to help us get moving sometimes. Once the body feels the benefit it can make the next time a little easier. I hope you found something here to help you get going.
